How It Works

Time on page (also called dwell time) is a key user engagement metric that measures how long a visitor spends on a specific page. This tool tracks three distinct states and provides scroll depth as an additional signal.

Tracked States
  • Active time — the user is interacting with the page (mouse movement, clicks, scrolling, key presses, touch events)
  • Idle time — the page is visible but the user has stopped interacting for longer than the idle timeout threshold
  • Hidden time — the browser tab is not visible (user switched tabs, minimized the window, or locked the screen)
Scroll Depth

Scroll depth tracks the furthest point a user has scrolled on the page as a percentage of the total scrollable height. High scroll depth combined with long active time indicates strong content engagement.

Why It Matters for SEO
  • Dwell time signal — search engines use time on page as an indirect ranking factor; longer times suggest content relevance
  • Bounce rate correlation — very short times often indicate a bounce, which can hurt rankings
  • Content optimization — identify which pages engage users and which lose them quickly

How Detection Works
  • Uses the Page Visibility API to detect tab switches
  • Listens for mousemove, click, scroll, keydown, and touchstart events to detect activity

  • All tracking runs client-side with zero external requests
